If you really want to make your own way through the snow, grab a pair of snowshoes and enjoy a completely different experience than winter hiking on groomed trails. It is physically more demanding but provides a more intense experience of nature.
The Engadin offers a number of marked snowshoe trails for this purpose. From short routes for beginners and families to a more challenging tour for more ambitious explorers.
Muottas Muragl: where sledders, winter hikers, snowshoe hikers, excursionists, and general snow lovers come together. And the mountain offers everyone just what they are looking for. For a snowshoe hiker, there is a three-kilometer circular trail that offers the best views of the frozen lakes and the Bernina Range. Muottas Muragl lives up to its reputation as the most beautiful panoramic mountain in the Engadin, even at night. If you have the opportunity, you should therefore go on a snowshoe tour during the full moon. The Pontresina Mountaineering School offers four guided tours between December and March. And during a full moon or otherwise - the best way to end the evening is at the Romantikhotel Muottas Muragl.
On Furtschellas, a trail with a certain extra comfort awaits you. The Corvatsch Lake Trail is completely marked with wooden posts so you can lose yourself in the beauty of the landscape but not lose your way. From the middle station Furtschellas-Chüdera, you will reach magnificent viewpoints over the snow-covered valley with its frozen lakes. After 1.8 km you can indulge in rustic hut magic and delicious specialties at Ustaria Rabgiusa before heading back the same way.
Two other snowshoe trails starting in Sils lead you to the dreamy Val Fex.
The Stazerwald Trail leads you over snowy moor clearings. The route leads from the Cross-Country Skiing Center Pontresina at the train station to the Cross-Country Skiing School in Celerina, but it is also possible to do it the other way around. You are welcome to consider the marker posts as guide points and trace your own path. Pontresina (Resgia parking lot) is also a good starting point for the easy trail to the Morteratsch train station, which runs over high plateaus and through winter forests. From here, if you wish, you can continue on the Morteratsch trail towards the glacier tongue. The crowning glory of this tour towards the Bernina Range is the spectacular view of Piz Bernina.
This somewhat more demanding tour along the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway offers a magnificent alpine panorama. Get off at Bernina Suot and trek between the railroad tracks and the edge of the forest past the Diavolezza valley station to Alp Bondo. A loop then takes you back to the start.
